While the New York Knicks have been out of action for over a month now, one player has made headlines recently. Iman Shumpert has gotten his name back in the news not for something he has done on the court, but for his passion that he has off of it; rapping.
The Knicks shooting guard released a new song titled,
“Chiraq Freestyle” in which Shumpert works on perfecting his craft off the
court over the beat from Lil’ Durk’s “Chiraq” beat.

While this is not the first time that Shumpert has
performed, it has a different feel than the other ones that he has released. It
has a much darker feel to it, almost something straight out of an episode from American Horror Story. This is also the
first time to our knowledge that he curses in a video, making numerous
innuendos and making a video that will catch attention’s people, which includes
a scantly clad woman ‘twerking’ with a chipmunk head being watched by a person
in a bear suit and a clown as well. It is something you have to see to believe.
For the actual lyrics, the song isn’t terrible. Shumpert
goes hard right from the beginning, and while the main topic of the song is his
extensive shoe game, he presents it well with well thought out precision. It
may not be a true freestyle in terms of something that he raps right off the
top of his head on the spot, but nonetheless he avoids sounding like a mess an
embarrassing himself.
While many people will ridicule Shumpert for his rap
attempts, saying he should be working more on his game for a Knicks team that
missed the playoffs than his flow, he should not be ripped apart for this. Just
like any person, Shumpert has hobbies he likes to spend his time doing, his
just happens to be rapping.

In reality, this is offseason time spent productively. He is
not putting himself in a position to get injured and to hamper his performance
for the upcoming season. Spending time at a studio perfecting a craft that he
loves is much better than spending nights at a club drinking and partying,
putting himself in negative situations. This is something we have seen Shumpert
work on in the past when he is unable to get on the basketball court, as he
released plenty of mixes during the NBA Lockout his rookie season and when he
was rehabbing from his knee surgery in 2012-2013 season.
When it comes down to it, Shumpert is still invested in the
Knicks and his basketball career. Working on his rap game in his down time is
the least of the problems the Knicks have this offseason. Let Shumpert be
himself and do something he loves. Here’s to hoping Shumpert continues to live
out a dream of his and we get more videos in the near future.
