Adam Silver talks "tanking"

The notion of teams "tanking" to earn a better draft position has been prevalent in the NBA for years and just as recently as this off-season whispers arose that the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers were a couple of teams that should consider tanking. Recently future NBA commissioner Adam Silver shared his thoughts on how he feels about tanking.
"I don't think it works, because culture is critical," Silver said. "And I don't think you can build a winning tradition with an undercurrent that "it's better to be bad." I've never seen it be succesful. It makes me nervous that it has to be asked, so I recognize it's something the league has to focus on."

I don't think anyone does it on purpose honestly. It isn't human nature to lose. If they lose and lose and lose its not exactly tanking, they just are that bad. For instance the bobcats in the past. Shoot, they've had top 5 picks the last like 5 years but haven't done shit with them.
ReplyDeleteGolden state lost 11 in a row to finish the 12 season and keep their pick (over the jazz) which turned out to be Barnes. They invented all sorts of injuries to keep players out of the lineup and fielded a d league squad. That was the clearest recent example of tanking, and one that worked.
