Knicks' Smith undergoes surgery

The New York Knicks have just announced that G J.R. Smith had patella tendon surgery and arthroscopy for a tear in the lateral meniscus of his left knee. Smith's recovery time is expected to be 12-16 weeks.
I dont know how the knicks didn't know this dude was hurt before they signed him to a four year deal.I mean he knew he was hurt.He should have got this token care of right after the season now the knicks wont have him at the beginning of the season.
